GÖKOVA- AKYAKA ARTIK İNGİLİZ DİLİNDE YAZILMIŞ ŞİİRLERDE
İNGİLİZ ŞAİR VE KÜLTÜR ADAMI ALAN MOUNFORT (1939-?) III
CLEOPATRA'S BEACH- KLEOPATRA PLAJI
Antony had sand from Egypt transported here to create a more beautiful
beach for Cleopatra John Freely, The Western Shores of Turkey
Antony Mısır’da bulunan kumları Kleopatra için çok daha güzel plaj olması için buraya taşıttı.
John Freely
Roman soldiers from
a thousand ships
their tents flapping like flags
upon the hillside, some who'd ferries sand
to make this comely coral beach,
while others, campaign
killers, begged
the surgeon sun cauterize
their wounds.
Having sex, for his and
her camp followers
became a way of shaking off
the tensions wrought by war,
or the fetid ache of heavy labor
a method of renewal to satisfy
the concupiscent gaze of stars.
For Cleopatra, though, her time
upon the beach turned out to be
a revelation; something
could be gained
for Empire and the Throne
by the common domestic act
of straddling his legs, for he
who brought the sand here
made the bed
while she, no stranger to romance
the moon-drenched water fed,
politicized the hours
magicked his sword to candle wax,
his shield a pillow for her head.
Little has changed:
fifty boats a day
unload their pocket Antonys
and virtual Cleopatra's
defectors from
their northern daily urban wars,
to solve their sexual crosswords
on this safe escapest shore
where history is off-line
A place of healing then by faith
or laying on of hands,
under a clinical sun,
a man-made goddess
stands, a democratic vision now
not even the rough rocks dreamt.
